Vital Information on Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) Deposits In Nigeria

Chalcopyrite is one of the few natural minerals found in Nigeria that are not richly deposited in the country, and in Africa, it can also be found in Zambia and South Africa.

Chalcopyrite deposit in the country is found in Nasarawa State, Northern Part of Nigeria although recent research has claimed to find a good deposit of it in Ebonyi State, precisely in Ishiagu.

Chalcopyrite Ore Mineral Deposits in Nigeria

Chalcopyrite is a crystalline mineral with yellow metallic lustre and contains sulphide of copper and iron and it is the main ore of copper. Chalcopyrite oxidizes when exposed to air to form varieties of oxides, hydroxides, and sulfates.

The formation of Chalcopyrite can be of different forms, some are formed by the melting of crystallizing minerals in igneous rocks, some by magmatic segregation, some occur in pegmatite dikes, and metamorphic rocks.

Some are spread through schist and gneiss, some occur in veins and some replace country-rock, and some as an associate mineral ore such as pyrite, sphalerite, bornite, galena, and chalcocite.

There are various methods that can be used to extract the minerals from the containing ore Chalcopyrite, and this includes but is not limited to leaching, flotation separation, and extractive metallurgy process.

Chalcopyrite is found in Nigeria, West Africa but it’s not commercially mined yet, it is one of the most sought-after solid minerals because of its high copper content and its use in the metal industry.

Uses of Chalcopyrite

  • Is used as an ore of copper.
  • Can be used in metaphysical and for jewellery.
  • Is used as an ore of copper for electrical circuits and ammunition, pipes, coins, and also in bronze and brass.
