Though it might be commonly called Okpa (Igbo) by most persons, it has other local names assigned to it, as it is called Epa-Roro in (Yoruba), Kwaruru or Gurjiya in (Hausa).

In other African countries like Zimbabwe, it is known as Nyimo beans, in isiZulu, South Africa as Izindlubu, in Zambia as Ntoyo cibemba, and in South Africa as jugo beans.
