Ukwa East Local Government Area council was founded for the sole aim of getting developmental support from the upper tier through the councilors, local government chairman and other officials representing them at the state level.

The famous traditional Akwete weaving clothing is made from this particular Local government area.

It is bordered in the northeast by PortHarcourt city and in the southeast by the commercial city of Aba; the LGA also share a common boundary with Akwa Ibom state of Nigeria.
