Tarka is one of the 23 local government in Benue State with administrative headquarters domicile in the town of Wannune. It forms a federal constituency alongside Gboko local government area and happens to be one of the smallest local government area in Benue State.
It was established on 8th December 1996 and its name was derived from the late Sen.Joseph Sarwuan Tarka. They are blessed with vegetable production and a water fountain.
