How to Use This Calculator
Enter the old rent and proposed or new rent using the same payment period for both figures. Select how many months each amount represents, then choose the number of months over which you want to understand the financial effect.
How Rent Increase Is Calculated
Percentage Change = (New Rent − Old Rent) ÷ Old Rent × 100
A positive result is an increase. A negative result is a decrease. No change produces 0%.
Monthly and Annual Rent Equivalents
The calculator converts both rent figures to monthly and annual equivalents. This makes the financial effect easier to understand even when the quoted rent covers several months or a year.
Annual Equivalent = Monthly Equivalent × 12
Extra Cost Over Time
The comparison-horizon result multiplies the monthly-equivalent difference by the number of months entered. This can help a household estimate how much additional cash the new rent would require over the next year or another planning period.
Rent Increase in Nigeria
Rental markets, tenancy arrangements and applicable legal requirements can differ across Nigerian states, cities and individual agreements. The calculator therefore avoids embedding a universal permitted rent-increase percentage or notice rule. It is designed to quantify a change, not decide its legality.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a rent increase percentage?
Subtract the old rent from the new rent, divide the difference by the old rent, then multiply by 100.
What if the new rent is lower?
The calculator will show a negative naira change and negative percentage, indicating a rent decrease.
Can I compare annual rents?
Yes. Select 12 months when both the old and new amounts are annual rent figures.
Can I compare monthly rents?
Yes. Select one month when both amounts are monthly rents.
What does annual-equivalent change mean?
It is the monthly-equivalent rent difference multiplied by twelve, allowing the change to be viewed on a one-year basis.
Does the calculator say whether a rent increase is legal?
