How the Power Backup Requirement Calculator Works
The calculator totals the running watts of appliances expected to operate during an outage. It separately screens the largest startup increase while the other loads are running. Desired backup hours convert the running load into an AC energy requirement. Efficiency, usable depth of discharge and battery margin then convert that energy requirement into a nominal battery-energy planning figure.
Start With Essential Loads
Backup systems are often easier and less expensive to plan when essential loads are separated from non-essential loads. Lighting, communications, refrigeration, selected fans, computers or critical business equipment may need backup while high-consumption appliances can sometimes remain off. The appropriate priorities depend on the home or business.
Power Requirement vs Energy Requirement
Power, measured in watts or VA, determines how much load an inverter or generator must support at one time. Energy, measured in kWh, determines how long a battery can support that load. A system can therefore have enough inverter power but insufficient battery energy, or enough battery energy but an inverter that cannot support the peak load.
Backup Power Planning in Nigeria
Nigerian homes and businesses can use the calculator to define an outage-backup requirement before comparing solar, inverter, battery or generator solutions. The tool does not assume one standard Nigerian backup duration or equipment configuration; the user defines the loads and duration that matter to the particular site.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate how much backup power I need?
List the appliances that must operate during an outage, total their simultaneous running power, check startup demand for motors or compressors, and multiply the average running load by the desired backup time to estimate energy required.
What is the difference between backup power and backup energy?
Backup power is the instantaneous load an inverter or generator must support, while backup energy determines how long batteries can sustain the load.
Why should I exclude non-essential appliances?
Every additional load increases the required inverter power and battery energy. Prioritising essential loads can reduce equipment size and cost.
Why does the calculator include startup watts?
Motors, pumps, compressors and some appliances can temporarily require substantially more power when starting than during normal operation.
Does this calculator tell me exactly which battery to buy?
No. It estimates nominal battery energy. Battery chemistry, voltage, Ah/module capacity, C-rate, BMS and manufacturer compatibility require separate sizing and verification.
Can I use the result to choose an inverter?
The running and startup figures provide useful inputs, but final inverter selection should be refined with the dedicated Inverter Size Calculator and verified against manufacturer specifications.
Does the calculator automatically size solar panels?
No. Solar PV sizing depends on daily energy to be replenished, solar resource, system losses and charging strategy. Use the Solar System Size Calculator separately.
