How the Electricity Consumption Calculator Works
Electrical energy is calculated from power and time. For each appliance, quantity × watts × hours of use gives watt-hours per day. Dividing by 1,000 converts watt-hours to kilowatt-hours (kWh). The calculator then applies the number of usage days per week to estimate weekly, average monthly and annual consumption.
How to Use the Calculator
Add the appliances or equipment you want to include. Enter how many of each you use, their wattage and the approximate number of hours they operate on a typical usage day. Enter the number of days per week that pattern applies. You may optionally enter an electricity rate to obtain a simple energy-charge estimate, but the main output remains electricity consumption.
Understanding kW and kWh
kW measures power at a point in time, while kWh measures energy used over time. A 1 kW load operating continuously for one hour uses 1 kWh. This distinction is important when planning electricity bills, solar systems, batteries and generator operating requirements.
Electricity Consumption in Nigeria
Nigerian homes and businesses can use this calculator to organize appliance-level electricity demand without embedding one national electricity tariff into the calculation. Applicable tariffs and billing conditions can differ and may change, so current price information should remain separate from the underlying energy calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate electricity consumption in kWh?
Multiply appliance power in watts by operating hours, then divide by 1,000. For multiple identical appliances, multiply by the quantity as well.
What is the difference between kW and kWh?
kW measures power, while kWh measures energy consumed over time. A 2 kW appliance running for three hours uses 6 kWh if it draws 2 kW continuously.
How do I estimate monthly electricity consumption?
Estimate the energy used during a typical week and convert it to an average month. This calculator uses 52 weeks divided by 12 months for the monthly average.
Does an appliance always consume its rated wattage?
No. Nameplate wattage may represent rated or maximum input. Equipment that cycles, changes speed or responds to temperature can have a different average consumption.
Can I use this calculator to size a solar system?
Yes, the estimated daily kWh can be a useful input to solar sizing, but solar design also requires solar-resource, efficiency and system-design assumptions.
Does this calculator know my current electricity tariff in Nigeria?
No. It does not hard-code a current tariff. You can enter an applicable rate for a simple estimate, while a dedicated bill calculator can handle more detailed billing assumptions.
Can this calculate generator fuel consumption?
No. Electricity consumption can help define the energy requirement, but generator fuel consumption depends on the generator and operating load. Use the Generator Fuel Cost Calculator for that purpose.
