How the Electricity Bill Calculator Works
The calculator multiplies electricity consumption in kWh by the rate you enter. It then adds any other charges, applies the VAT percentage you specify to the energy-plus-fixed-charge subtotal, and finally includes any previous balance or adjustment. The inputs remain visible so the estimate can be checked rather than hiding assumptions inside the calculation.
Using Meter Readings
If your meter reading is expressed in cumulative kWh, subtract the previous reading from the current reading to estimate consumption during the period. The calculator's meter-reading mode performs this subtraction automatically. The current reading must not be lower than the previous reading unless there has been a meter reset or other special circumstance that needs separate treatment.
Electricity Tariffs in Nigeria
This page deliberately does not embed one supposed national electricity rate. The applicable rate can depend on the customer's current tariff classification and provider, and rates can change. Enter the tariff applicable to the bill you are estimating and use current supported information when checking that input.
Electricity Bill vs Electricity Consumption
Consumption and cost are different measurements. kWh describes electrical energy used, while the electricity bill converts that consumption into money under a tariff and billing structure. Use the Electricity Consumption Calculator first when you need to estimate kWh from appliances and operating hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my electricity bill from kWh?
Multiply the electricity consumed in kWh by the applicable rate per kWh, then account for applicable taxes, fixed charges, previous balances and other bill adjustments.
How do I calculate electricity used from meter readings?
For cumulative kWh readings, subtract the previous meter reading from the current meter reading. The difference is the consumption for that period.
Does this calculator use the current electricity tariff in Nigeria?
No. It deliberately requires you to enter the applicable rate because tariffs can change and may differ by customer classification or provider.
Does the calculator include VAT?
It includes a VAT field that you control. Enter the percentage applicable to the bill you are estimating after checking the current billing treatment.
Why might my actual electricity bill differ from this estimate?
Your provider may apply tariff classifications, taxes, fixed charges, adjustments, prior balances or other billing rules that are not represented by a simple kWh calculation.
Can I estimate my kWh from household appliances first?
Yes. Use the Finelib Electricity Consumption Calculator to estimate kWh from appliance wattage and operating hours, then carry that consumption into this bill calculator.
Can this calculator compare grid electricity with generator or solar power?
The result can be used as one input to a broader comparison, but generator and solar costs require their own operating, equipment and lifecycle assumptions.
