Rose apples are bell-shaped edible fruits that smell and taste mildly of roses; the colour ranges from light pink to purplish pink, and pink-red, the flavour is nice and mildly sweet. 

They are also called wax apples or java apples; they are rich in nutrients such as vitamin C, thiamin, niacin, dietary fibre, vitamin A, protein, calcium, phosphorus, citric acid, calcium, iron, sulfur, and potassium as well as beneficial organic compounds which include friedelolactone, jambosine and betulinic acid that can treat fungal infections on the skin.

a)  These apples are special in such a way that they contain vitamins and minerals that serve as detoxifiers used to remove toxic substances or the resulting effects from the body.

 

b)  It improves skin health. The presence of certain components with anti-fungal and microbial effects in water/rose apple made it strong to prevent and cure and skin infection.  

 

c)  Regular eating of water apples or rose apples can help repair body tissues or damaged cells in the human body because it has enough vitamin C content that is estimated at 22.3 mg in every 100g of water apple.

 

d)  Jambosine is a bioactive crystalline alkaloid that is present in rose/water apples that suspends the conversion of starch into sugar thereby regulating the sugar level especially in diabetic patients; conclusively, this compound helps in the treatment of diabetes. It also maintains a healthy heart by moderating cholesterol level.

 

e)  Prevent constipation and aid in normal digestion due to its abundance of dietary fibre in good quantity as the body requires for proper digestion. In other words, it maintains the overall body weight.

 

f)  Leaves of rose apples are beneficial and medicinal to human health because it contains a bitter-tasting organic substance called tannins to a certain level that can be used to treat diarrhoea and dry watery secretion.

 

g)  There are essential minerals and vitamins that are good for pregnant women present in water/rose apples. In the case of pregnancy, there are inevitable health conditions such as nausea and vomiting which can cause dehydration during pregnancy; water apples help to keep them hydrated.

 

h)  Water apples have antioxidant properties which help to protect the body from free radicals attacks as well as prevent certain gastrointestinal problems.

 

i)  Necessary for bone health because they contain calcium to a certain percentage (29 mg of calcium according to research) which help to maintain healthy teeth and bones as well as prevent osteoporosis.

 

Rose apples or water apples can be eaten raw or preserved as jams and jellies; they are used for culinary purposes in desert food preparation and can be eaten raw as apple.

Traditionally, the seeds and leaves of rose apples can be used to treat dysentery, diarrhoea and several other sicknesses that is to say that generally, the fruits are wholesomely healthy and beneficial in everything.
