Ibarapa counts as one among the existing 33 North Local Government Areas of Oyo state which was created out on the 4th of December 1996 from the defunct Ifeloju Local government. Its administrative headquarters is located in Ayete town.
It shares boundaries with Ibarapa North West Local Council Development Area, Egbado North and Benin Republic in the West and Ibarapa East and Iseyin LGAs.

This LGA was carved out to bring government closer to the people at the grass root level, to bring socour to the sufferings of the rural dwellers. In general, to accelerate developmental project in the local area.
It has 10 electoral wards and 10 corresponding councilors that represent the wards.
