How the calculation works
Male equation: 50 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch above 5 feet.
Female equation: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg for each inch above 5 feet.
For 5 feet 7 inches, the male equation gives 66.1 kg and the female equation gives 61.6 kg. These are reference values, not medically determined healthy weight ranges.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is ideal body weight?
Ideal body weight is a formula-based reference estimate. It is not a medically prescribed target for everyone.
Which formula does this calculator use?
It uses the Devine (1974) formula: 50 kg for the male equation or 45.5 kg for the female equation at 5 feet, plus 2.3 kg per inch above 5 feet.
Can I use it below 5 feet?
This calculator limits the Devine estimate to heights of 5 feet or more because extrapolating below that height is less reliable.
Does ideal body weight depend on age?
The Devine equation uses height and a selected sex-based equation, not age. Age and body composition can still matter clinically.
Is ideal body weight the same as BMI?
No. BMI compares weight to squared height. The Devine formula estimates a reference weight from height.
Should I use this as a weight-loss goal?
Not without considering your health, body composition and professional advice. A formula result is not an individual treatment target.
Can athletes use this calculator?
Athletes may have higher muscle mass, making a simple reference-weight equation less representative.
Important information
The Devine formula was developed for clinical reference and drug-dosing contexts. It is not a validated personal goal weight for every adult. Consult a qualified clinician for individual guidance.
