How the BMR calculation works
Male equation: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) - 5 × age + 5.
Female equation: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) - 5 × age - 161.
Height in centimetres = (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54. BMR is not the same as total daily calorie needs, which also include activity and other energy expenditure.
Example: age 30, male equation, 70 kg and 5 feet 7 inches produces approximately 1,618 kcal/day.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is BMR?
Basal Metabolic Rate is an estimate of energy your body uses at rest to support basic functions.
How is BMR calculated?
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation with weight, height, age and a male or female equation constant.
Is BMR the same as daily calorie needs?
No. Daily calorie needs usually exceed BMR because movement, digestion and activity require energy.
Can I use feet and inches?
Yes. Enter whole feet and additional inches. The calculator converts height into centimetres.
What does the sex-based equation selection mean?
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation uses different constants for male and female groups. Choose the equation most appropriate to your physiology or seek professional advice.
Can I use this calculator during pregnancy?
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, illness and other circumstances can change energy needs. Seek individualized clinical advice.
Is the BMR estimate a medical diagnosis?
No. It is an estimate, not a measurement or individualized dietary prescription.
