How the Generator Fuel Cost Calculator Works
You can calculate fuel use directly from litres consumed per hour, or from litres consumed per kWh together with the generator's average real electrical output. The calculator applies your operating hours and days per week to estimate daily, weekly, average monthly and annual fuel consumption. Fuel expenditure is calculated only after you enter your own current price per litre.
How to Use the Calculator
If you know the generator's litres-per-hour consumption at the relevant load, use the first method. If you have a fuel-consumption figure expressed in litres per kWh, use the second method and enter the average kW actually supplied while operating. Then enter daily operating hours, days per week and the fuel price you expect to pay.
Why Generator Fuel Consumption Changes
A generator does not necessarily consume fuel at one fixed rate. Consumption can change with electrical loading, engine and alternator efficiency, generator size, maintenance condition, ambient conditions and the manufacturer's design. An oversized generator running lightly loaded may also behave differently from a correctly loaded unit.
Generator Fuel Cost Planning in Nigeria
Fuel expenditure can be a significant operating cost for Nigerian homes and businesses that use generators. Because fuel prices can change and may vary by location or purchasing channel, Finelib does not hard-code a supposedly current petrol or diesel price into this calculator. Users enter their current price, while supported market price intelligence can be handled separately through Finelib Prices.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate generator fuel cost per day?
Multiply fuel consumption in litres per hour by operating hours per day, then multiply the resulting litres by the current fuel price per litre.
How can I calculate monthly generator fuel cost?
Estimate weekly consumption from operating hours and days, convert it to an average month, and multiply by the fuel price. This calculator uses 52 weeks divided by 12 months for its average monthly estimate.
Does a generator use the same amount of fuel at every load?
No. Fuel consumption normally varies with electrical load and generator characteristics. Use manufacturer data at the relevant load level or measured site consumption where available.
Should I use litres per hour or litres per kWh?
Use the measurement supported by the data you have. Litres per hour is convenient when you know consumption at a particular operating load. Litres per kWh relates fuel use to electrical energy produced.
Does this calculator use the current petrol or diesel price in Nigeria?
No. Fuel prices change and can vary by location. Enter the current price you expect to pay rather than relying on a fixed value embedded in the calculator.
Does the result include generator maintenance costs?
No. The main result covers fuel expenditure only. Servicing, oil, filters, repairs, depreciation and other ownership costs are separate.
Can I use this to compare generator and solar costs?
The fuel estimate can be one input to a broader comparison, but solar and generator ownership costs require additional assumptions. Use the dedicated Solar vs Generator Cost Calculator for that comparison.
