Seed Requirement Calculator

Estimate planting holes, seeds to purchase and optional seed weight based on farm area, planting spacing, seeds per hole, germination rate and a loss allowance.

Calculate your seed requirement

Enter the area to plant and the spacing recommended for your crop. The example values are for demonstration only, not crop-specific recommendations.

1. Farm area

Accounts for paths, boundaries and non-planting land.

2. Planting spacing and seeds

Used to estimate how many seeds should successfully germinate.
Applied after adjusting for germination.
Enter 0 if unknown; seed weight will not be estimated.
Planning assumption: The model assumes a rectangular spacing pattern. It estimates enough seeds for the target number of germinated seedlings across the field on average. It does not guarantee that every individual hole will germinate successfully. Extra seed loss and germination adjustment are distinct allowances.

Seed quantities are rounded up to whole seeds. Planting-hole count is an area-based estimate and may differ from actual field layout.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the total farm area and the percentage suitable for planting. Specify spacing between rows and holes in centimetres, the desired germinated seeds per hole, expected germination rate and additional loss allowance. If you know the weight of 1,000 seeds, enter it to obtain an approximate total seed weight in kilograms.

Seed Requirement Formula

Usable area (m²) = Farm area (m²) × Usable percentage ÷ 100
Planting holes = Usable area (m²) ÷ [Row spacing (m) × Hole spacing (m)]
Target germinated seeds = Estimated planting holes × Seeds per hole
Germination-adjusted seeds = Target germinated seeds ÷ (Germination rate ÷ 100)
Seeds to purchase = Germination-adjusted seeds × (1 + Loss allowance ÷ 100), rounded up
Seed weight (kg) = Seeds to purchase × 1,000-seed weight (g) ÷ 1,000,000

Understanding Your Results

The estimated planting holes reflect a regular grid layout. The germination adjustment increases the seed requirement when expected germination is below 100%. The loss allowance adds a separate buffer for handling, damage or other losses. The estimated seed weight requires an actual thousand-seed weight for the variety and lot you intend to use.

Important Field Considerations

Seed size, sowing depth, soil moisture, planting method, crop variety, field shape, emergence rates, thinning and replanting practices can change the quantity actually needed. Where each planting hole must have a specific probability of achieving a minimum stand, a more detailed per-hole germination model may be needed.

Seed Planning in Nigeria

Seed specifications and recommended planting densities vary by crop, seed supplier, soil and growing conditions across Nigeria. Confirm spacing and germination information from your seed packaging, agronomist or trusted extension guidance. This calculator does not invent local seed prices or recommend a universal spacing for any crop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the number of planting holes calculated?

Planting holes equal the usable planting area in square metres divided by the row spacing multiplied by the plant spacing, both in metres.

Why does the calculator ask for germination rate?

Germination rate helps estimate extra seeds needed to achieve the desired number of successfully germinated seeds. It is a planning estimate, not a guarantee.

How is seed loss allowance applied?

The calculator increases the germination-adjusted seed requirement by the entered loss allowance percentage.

What does seeds per planting hole mean?

It is the target number of germinated seeds per planting hole. For crops where several seeds are deliberately sown per hole, use that target accordingly.

Can I use hectares, acres or square metres?

Yes. The entered area is converted to square metres before calculating planting holes.

Can I calculate seed weight in kilograms?

Yes. Enter the weight of 1,000 seeds in grams. The calculator estimates total seed weight in kilograms.

Does the calculator account for field layout and irregular plots?

Only through the usable area percentage. Real field layouts, borders, paths, germination conditions and thinning practices may change the actual requirement.
