Calculate livestock feed requirements
Enter one livestock group with a reasonably similar average liveweight and diet. Use the same feed measurement basis throughout.
Enter livestock numbers, weight, feeding rate and period, then calculate.
Seven-day requirement is a standard seven-day rate, even when the selected period is shorter. Bag purchase cost uses rounded-up whole bags, not the exact feed consumed.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter the livestock population, average liveweight and appropriate daily feed intake as a percentage of liveweight. Choose whether the rate is expressed as as-fed feed or dry matter. Set the number of feeding days, wastage allowance, bag size and optional bag price. When using a dry matter rate, also provide the ration's dry matter percentage so that bag requirements are converted to as-fed weight.
Livestock Feed Calculation Formula
Daily base feed (kg) = Total liveweight × Daily feeding rate ÷ 100
As-fed daily feed = Base feed (if as-fed basis), or dry matter feed ÷ (ration dry matter % ÷ 100)
Daily feed with wastage = As-fed daily feed × (1 + Wastage % ÷ 100)
Total period feed = Daily feed with wastage × Number of days
Whole bags = Round up (Total period feed ÷ Bag size)
Estimated purchase cost = Whole bags × Price per bag
Understanding the Results
The daily figure is a constant-rate planning estimate. Weekly feed represents seven days, and period feed covers the days you entered. Whole bags are rounded up so that the purchased quantity is not below the estimated requirement. The optional purchase cost assumes the entire quantity is obtained in bags at the price entered.
As-Fed Weight Versus Dry Matter
Dry matter excludes feed moisture; as-fed weight includes it. A dry matter feeding rate cannot be directly converted into bags without knowing the ration's dry matter content. This calculator includes that conversion when the dry matter basis is selected. Feed types and moisture levels may vary, so mixed diets require a suitable weighted assumption.
Livestock Feed Planning in Nigeria
Feed costs and available rations vary across Nigerian markets and seasons. The calculator does not insert current market prices or species-specific feeding recommendations. Use measured animal weights, suitable feed plans and verified supplier quotations. Seek qualified livestock nutrition or veterinary advice when selecting a ration.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the livestock feed calculator estimate?
It estimates daily, seven-day and selected-period feed quantities from herd size, average liveweight and a daily feeding percentage.
What does feeding rate mean?
It is the assumed daily feed amount as a percentage of live bodyweight. Specify whether the rate applies to as-fed feed or dry matter.
Does it work for cattle, goats, sheep and pigs?
It can calculate arithmetic feed quantities for different livestock, but suitable feeding rates, diet types and nutritional requirements vary by species and production stage.
How are bags calculated?
The calculator divides the total feed requirement, including the wastage allowance, by the selected bag size and rounds up to whole bags.
Can I estimate feed cost?
Yes. Enter the price per bag to estimate the purchase cost of the rounded-up number of bags.
Does it account for animal growth or herd changes?
No. It assumes the entered animal count, average weight and feeding rate remain constant throughout the period.
Are Nigerian feed prices or veterinary feeding rates included?
No. Enter current prices and a feeding rate appropriate for the animals and ration, preferably with guidance from a livestock nutrition professional.
