Fish Farming Profit Calculator

Estimate revenue, costs and net profit for a fish farming production cycle. Account for fingerlings, feed, expected mortality, harvest weight, fish selling price and operating expenses.

Calculate fish farming profit

Use values for the same production cycle. Enter actual or expected costs in Nigerian naira (₦). The results are estimates, not guarantees.

1. Fish stocking, survival and sales

2. Fingerling, feed and production costs

3. Other revenue

Planning assumptions: Mortality is applied to the original fish count, with fractional surviving fish rounded down. The average sale weight is assumed for all surviving fish. Feed and operating costs are the full entered cycle costs; mortality does not automatically reduce them. Exclude capital purchases unless an appropriate cycle expense is entered.

Enter your production assumptions and costs, then calculate.

—Estimated fish surviving for sale
—Estimated fish lost
—Estimated fish harvest weight
—Fish sales revenue
—Total revenue
—Fingerling purchase cost
—Feed cost
—Total production and operating costs
—Net profit margin
—Break-even price per kg
—Total cost per harvested kg
—Net profit per harvested kg

Break-even price accounts for other entered revenue. It may be negative when other revenue exceeds total costs; this is a mathematical result, not a market price recommendation.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the number of fingerlings stocked, expected mortality, average sale weight of each surviving fish and sale price per kilogram. Add fingerling purchase price, total feed expenses, veterinary costs, labour, utilities, pond maintenance, harvesting, transport and other expenses for the same cycle. Click Calculate to view estimated sales and profit.

Fish Farming Profit Formula

Estimated survivors = floor(Fingerlings stocked × (1 − Mortality % ÷ 100))
Harvest weight (kg) = Survivors × Average sale weight (kg/fish)
Fish sales revenue = Harvest weight × Selling price per kg
Total revenue = Fish sales revenue + Other revenue
Fingerling cost = Fingerlings stocked × Price per fingerling
Total costs = Fingerling cost + Feed cost + All other entered expenses
Net profit = Total revenue − Total costs
Profit margin = Net profit ÷ Total revenue × 100% (if revenue is positive)
Break-even price per kg = (Total costs − Other revenue) ÷ Harvest weight (if harvest weight is positive)

Understanding Your Results

Estimated survivors and harvest weight determine projected fish sales. Net profit is positive when entered revenue exceeds entered costs and negative when costs exceed revenue. Break-even price indicates the theoretical selling price per kilogram needed to recover costs under the stated assumptions.

Fish Farming in Nigeria

Catfish, tilapia and other fish farms face varying feed prices, water and power expenses, survival rates, sale weights and buyer demand. This calculator uses user-supplied figures rather than assuming current Nigerian market prices. Verify input quotations and buyer offers before making investment decisions.

Important Limitations

This is a simple one-cycle profitability model, not a growth, feeding, cash-flow or investment-return model. Actual fish survival, size distribution, harvest losses, sales discounts and inventory can change results. Depreciation, taxes and financing costs are included only if entered in the applicable expense fields.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is fish farming profit calculated?

Net profit is estimated fish sales revenue plus other farm revenue minus fingerling, feed and other entered cycle expenses.

How is mortality included?

The expected survival percentage is applied to the stocked fish count to estimate fish available for sale.

How is fish sales revenue estimated?

Estimated surviving fish count multiplied by average sale weight per fish and the selling price per kilogram.

Does this calculator work for catfish and tilapia?

Yes. Enter assumptions relevant to the fish species, farm cycle and sales arrangement.

Are feed and fingerling prices live Nigerian market prices?

No. You enter the prices and costs; this tool does not claim current market rates.

What is break-even selling price?

The selling price per kilogram that would cover the entered total costs after allowing for other revenue, assuming the estimated sale weight is achieved.

Does this forecast actual fish growth or mortality?

No. Growth, survival and prices are user-supplied planning assumptions. Actual outcomes may differ.
