Fish Farming Feed Calculator

Estimate daily and total fish feed requirements using fish population, average fish weight, daily feeding rate, production period, feed bag size and price.

Calculate fish feed requirements

Use an average fish weight and feeding rate representative of the selected period. All prices are entered by you in Nigerian naira (₦).

Example: 3 means 3% of estimated biomass per day; not a recommended rate.
Enter 0 if you do not want a cost estimate.
Planning assumption: Fish count, average weight and feeding rate are held constant across the selected period. Fish grow, so long periods may require staged recalculation. Feed requirements depend on species, life stage, feed quality, temperature and water conditions. Consult appropriate aquaculture guidance for feeding rates.

—Feed weight purchased in bags

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the estimated number of live fish, their average individual weight in grams and the feeding rate as a percentage of total biomass per day. Add the feeding period, optional wastage allowance, bag size and optional price per bag. Select Calculate Fish Feed to view daily, weekly and period feed quantities, whole bags and cost.

Fish Feed Calculation Formula

Fish biomass (kg) = Number of fish × Average weight (g) ÷ 1,000
Daily feed (kg) = Biomass × Feeding rate (%) ÷ 100
Daily feed with allowance = Daily feed × (1 + Wastage % ÷ 100)
Period feed (kg) = Daily feed with allowance × Number of days
Whole bags = Round up (Period feed ÷ Bag size)
Purchase cost = Whole bags × Price per bag

Understanding Your Results

Biomass is the combined estimated weight of live fish. The daily feed amount is based on that biomass, not on a fixed feed amount per fish. The calculator adds your wastage allowance and reports the feed required for the chosen period. Bag counts are rounded up because suppliers normally sell whole bags; cost therefore reflects whole-bag purchasing rather than the exact feed consumed.

Important Fish Farming Considerations

As fish grow, the total biomass changes and feeding rates may need adjustment. Stock losses, grading, feed conversion, water quality, temperature and appetite can also affect feed consumption. Recalculate periodically rather than relying on one fixed-weight estimate for an entire growth cycle.

Fish Farming in Nigeria

Catfish and tilapia operations may use different feed programmes and bag sizes. Prices can differ by location, brand and season. This calculator does not assume a current Nigerian feed price or prescribe a biological feeding rate. Use current supplier quotes and sound farm-management advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is daily fish feed calculated?

Multiply the estimated live fish biomass in kilograms by the daily feeding rate percentage, then divide by 100.

What is fish biomass?

Biomass is the combined live weight of fish: number of fish multiplied by average weight per fish.

What feeding rate should I use?

Use a feeding rate appropriate to the fish species, size, water temperature and feed programme, based on professional or supplier guidance. No universal rate is assumed.

Does this calculator account for fish growth?

The standard estimate holds average fish weight and fish count constant across the selected period. Recalculate as the stock grows or changes.

Can I include expected fish mortality?

Enter your estimated surviving fish population for the calculation period. The tool does not model daily mortality or growth.

How many feed bags should I buy?

The calculator divides the estimated total feed requirement including wastage by the selected bag size and rounds up to whole bags.

Does it show Nigerian feed prices?

No. Enter your actual quoted feed bag price in naira to calculate an estimated purchase cost.
