Crop Yield Calculator

Calculate your total crop harvest in kilograms and metric tonnes, plus harvested yield per hectare and per acre. Useful for maize, rice, cassava and other crops.

Calculate crop yield

Enter the weight of crop harvested and the corresponding farm area. Both must describe the same field and harvest period.

Standard harvested yield usually uses harvested area.
Measurement note: Enter the actual crop weight in kg or metric tonnes, not bags or baskets unless their net weight is known. Use harvested area for standard yield reporting. If you use planted area, results will be explicitly labelled per planted area.

How to Use This Calculator

Enter your total harvested crop weight, choose kilograms or metric tonnes, and enter the area from which it was produced. Select hectares, acres or square metres. Choose whether that area is harvested or planted. Click Calculate to convert the harvest and obtain yield per hectare and acre.

Crop Yield Formula

Harvest in kilograms = Harvest in tonnes × 1,000 (if tonnes entered)
Yield (kg/ha) = Total harvest (kg) ÷ Area (ha)
Yield (t/ha) = Yield (kg/ha) ÷ 1,000
Yield (kg/acre) = Total harvest (kg) ÷ Area (acres)
Area conversion: 1 hectare ≈ 2.4710538 acres; 1 hectare = 10,000 m²

What Crop Yield Means

Crop yield expresses physical harvest output per unit of area. A higher yield may indicate more harvested produce per hectare, but it does not automatically mean a higher profit. Production expenses, losses, selling prices and quality also matter.

Harvested Area Versus Planted Area

Harvested area excludes planted land that was not harvested. Using planted area can produce a different ratio when crop failure or partial harvesting occurs. This tool lets you choose either basis and identifies it in the result.

Using Yield Results in Nigeria

Yields vary with crop variety, soil, irrigation, rainfall, farm practices and location. Compare results only when crop type, harvest measurement, moisture basis and area definitions are reasonably consistent. This calculator does not insert or claim current Nigerian crop-yield benchmarks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is crop yield per hectare?

Crop yield per hectare is the harvested crop weight divided by the harvested area measured in hectares.

How many kilograms are in one metric tonne?

One metric tonne equals 1,000 kilograms.

Can I use acres instead of hectares?

Yes. Enter area in acres and the calculator converts it to hectares and reports yield per acre as well.

Does yield mean the same thing as farm profit?

No. Yield measures harvested output per area, while profit also depends on selling prices and production costs.

Should I enter planted area or harvested area?

Use harvested area for standard harvested-yield reporting. If only planted area is known, results are per planted area and should be labelled accordingly.

Does the calculator predict harvest yield?

No. It calculates yield from your entered harvest and area; it does not forecast weather, crop performance or future output.

Can I include unsold produce in the harvest?

Yes. Enter the physical quantity harvested, including unsold produce, provided the measurement basis is consistent.
