Crop Production Cost Calculator

Estimate the cost of growing a crop for one production cycle, including inputs, labour, land preparation, irrigation, harvesting and cost per hectare.

Calculate crop production cost

Enter the area planted and the costs attributable to the same crop production cycle.

Leave as 0 to omit cost per kg.

Production and operating costs

Cost basis: Enter only the costs for this crop cycle. Land purchase price and full equipment purchase price are capital items and should not automatically be counted as one-cycle production expenses. Enter relevant rent, hire or period-specific costs instead.

Enter the planted area and cycle expenses, then calculate.

—Cost per hectare
—Cost per acre
—Cost per kilogram, if yield entered
—Area in hectares
—Inputs and crop protection
—Other production and operating costs

How to Use This Calculator

Enter the area planted in hectares, acres or square metres. Fill in your costs for land preparation, seeds, fertilizer, crop protection, labour, irrigation, machinery, harvesting and other relevant expenses. Optionally enter expected harvested kilograms to calculate an indicative cost per kilogram. Press Calculate to see the results.

Crop Production Cost Formula

Total crop production cost = Sum of all entered crop-cycle expenses
Cost per hectare = Total cost ÷ Planted area in hectares
Cost per acre = Total cost ÷ Planted area in acres
Cost per kilogram = Total cost ÷ Harvested output in kilograms (if provided)

Understanding the Results

The total cost measures the resources assigned to the selected crop cycle. Cost per hectare standardizes expenses by planted area, making it easier to compare production cycles or fields. Cost per kilogram depends on expected or actual harvest volume and is not a selling price or profit measure.

Important Factors Affecting Crop Cost

Seed variety, soil condition, planting density, weather, irrigation, farm machinery, labour availability, input waste, yield loss, transport and storage can all influence crop production cost. Ensure expenses and farm area refer to the same cycle.

Crop Production Costs in Nigeria

Costs vary by crop, location, season, irrigation method and access to suppliers. This calculator uses your figures rather than inventing current Nigerian fertilizer, labour or equipment prices. Verify current quotations and local conditions before making decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is crop production cost?

It is the sum of the entered expenses for producing a crop during the selected production cycle.

How is cost per hectare calculated?

Total crop production cost divided by the planted area in hectares.

Can I enter farm area in acres?

Yes. The calculator converts acres to hectares before calculating cost per hectare.

Does the calculator include harvesting costs?

Yes. Harvesting and post-harvest handling are separate cost inputs.

Does it calculate crop profit?

No. This calculator measures production costs, not sales revenue or profit.

Are Nigerian fertilizer or labour prices preloaded?

No. All costs are entered by the user to avoid presenting unverified market rates.

Can I calculate production cost per kilogram?

Yes, if you provide expected harvested output. The result is an estimate and depends on your yield assumption.
